US policy in the region does not take into account the interests of the peoples of the South Caucasus. As reported by Day.Az with reference to Armenian media, Iranian Ambassador Mehdi Sobhani stated this, commenting on Washington’s statements on support for the Armenian-Azerbaijani process.

“We welcome the efforts of Armenia and Azerbaijan to achieve peace. We are against war and stand for peace. There is no alternative to peace in the region. This is our principled approach. We support dialogue between Yerevan and Baku,” Sobhani noted.

However, Tehran does not trust Washington. According to Sobhani, when the “Great Satan” enters the region, it pursues its own goals, and does not strive for peace and security of nations.

To achieve its goals, he added, the United States uses various tools.

“They want to turn the South Caucasus into a platform for settling scores with another country. Given our experience with the “Great Satan”, we are very skeptical about their statements,” the ambassador emphasized.

Iran does not believe that the United States wants good for the countries of the region.

“The United States is too far away to be directly affected by escalation in the region. Any war or tension here will affect all countries in the region,” he added.

Thus, according to him, the 3+3 format, which includes countries of the region, can contribute to achieving long-term peace. This format covers not only political but also economic and trade aspects, the ambassador summed up.
