Iran’s military leader has reaffirmed his commitment to avenge the death of Hamas leader Ismail Haniya, but said he will act separately from the “axis of resistance.”

According to Iran’s semi-official Tasnim news agency, Iranian Armed Forces Chief of Staff Mohammad Hossein Bagheri said in a speech on the 26th (local time), “The axis of resistance and Iran’s revenge for the blood of martyr Haniya are certain.”

Iran has vowed revenge on Israel since the assassination of Hamas leader Haniya in Tehran last month. But while Hezbollah attacked Israel last weekend, Iran has yet to take any serious action.

“Iran will decide on its own about revenge,” Bagheri said. “As we saw yesterday, the resistance groups will act separately and independently on this issue.” Hezbollah is the largest group of resistance groups supported by Iran.

Earlier this past weekend, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) carried out targeted airstrikes in Lebanon in response to Hezbollah’s attacks. Soon after, Hezbollah launched a large-scale drone and missile attack against Israel.

The series of events came to a close with Hezbollah’s statement that the “first phase of the attack was completed,” but there is still room for further conflict. The international community is also paying keen attention to when Iran will take action.

However, General Bagheri said that his country would not fall into the trap of enemy countries, including media provocations. His remarks that day were also interpreted as an attempt to emphasize that Hezbollah’s attack last weekend had nothing to do with Iran.
