Doha – Iran’s team members did not sing the national anthem at the FIFA World Cup venue in solidarity with the anti-government protests in Iran. Before the first match against England, the Iranian team members refrained from singing the national anthem. Before the match, Iran captain Alirez Jahanbakhsh had informed that a collective decision will be taken regarding the singing of the national anthem.

When the national anthem was played at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha, Iran’s players stood impassively. On September 26, Mehsa Amini, a twenty-two-year-old woman, was killed in police custody for allegedly not wearing hijab. The anti-hijab movement that arose after this continues strongly in Iran.
