Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is waiting for a formal response from the U.S. to its proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said the country is awaiting a formal U.S. response to its proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, after President Donald Trump rejected the deal on Saturday, citing Iran’s losses.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi confirmed on Saturday that the country is waiting for a formal response from the United States to its proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, following President Donald Trump’s rejection of the offer. Trump told reporters at the White House that Iran’s proposal was “not acceptableand accused Tehran of seeking a deal because it waslosing so badly.” The Strait, a critical route for global oil and gas supplies, has been effectively closed since February due to ongoing conflict.

U.S. Response and Iran’s Conditions

Iran’s negotiators are waiting for a definitive response from the U.S., according to Araghchi, who emphasized that any move to restore maritime traffic through the strait would depend on Washington meeting Tehran’s conditions. These include the release of frozen Iranian assets, lifting oil sanctions, and ending the naval blockade of Iranian ports. Araghchi reiterated that Iran’s proposal outlines a roadmap for reopening the strait within seven days if these steps are taken.

Trump’s rejection came despite Iran’s willingness to negotiate, with Araghchi stating that a negotiated solution remains the only viable path forward. The minister noted that Iran has kept diplomatic channels open, though he criticized Trump’s contradictory statements, saying, We have heard the first reaction from the U.S. president, but nothing has yet been conveyed to us by the mediators.

Oman’s Mediation Role

Oman, acting as a mediator between the U.S. and Iran, has called for continued dialogue to resolve the crisis. Oman’s foreign minister, Sayyid Badr bin Hamad bin Hamood Albusaidi, urged all parties to cooperate in safeguarding navigation through the strategic waterway during the UN General Assembly. Araghchi acknowledged Oman’s efforts, stating that Iran would decide based on the final position conveyed through the mediators.

The mediator’s role has become critical as tensions escalate. Araghchi said, We are waiting for the mediators to convey the definitive views to us, and we will make a decision based on them. However, no official U.S. response has been communicated to Iran, leaving the situation in limbo.

Unresolved Questions and Next Steps

The key unanswered question remains whether the U.S. will provide a formal response to Iran’s proposal. Araghchi’s comments suggest Iran is prepared to proceed if Washington meets its conditions, but Trump’s dismissal of the deal complicates prospects for a swift resolution. The Strait of Hormuz’s closure has already caused global oil price spikes and fuel cost increases, with Araghchi warning of massive rises in global oil prices and steep fuel cost increases for consumers.

Oman’s foreign minister reiterated the need for cooperation, stating, All parties should cooperate with Oman in efforts to safeguard navigation in the strategic waterway. However, without clarity from the U.S., the future of the Strait remains uncertain, with both sides locked in a high-stakes standoff.
