Iran is said to be planning to launch drones from Syria toward Israel in retaliation for the attack on Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

According to the Israeli daily Times of Israel on the 2nd (local time), the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a war monitor headquartered in the UK, reported that anonymous sources said Iranian drones are likely to be launched from the Syrian capital Damascus and the Syrian desert toward Israeli targets, and it could appear as if a pro-Iranian armed group launched the drones.

The SOHR report also said pro-Iranian militant groups instructed their members not to target US military bases unless the US directly came to Israel’s defense in response to Iranian retaliation.

U.S. President Joe Biden said the previous day that he would “protect Israel’s security from all threats from Iran.”

Haniyeh was assassinated at her residence in Tehran early the next morning after attending the inauguration ceremony of President Masoud Pezekian at the Iranian parliament building in Tehran on the 30th of last month.

Iran’s leadership has blamed Israel for Haniyeh’s assassination and threatened harsh retaliation.

Israel has warned that it will respond in kind if Iran retaliates.

Iran attacked Israel’s consulate in Syria in April with hundreds of missiles and drones, but most were shot down by the Iron Dome air defense system, causing limited damage.
