It has been reported that Iran’s star football player Woriya Ghafouri has been arrested during training.
It has now come to light that he was removed from the national team for the Qatar World Cup for spreading anti-government views.
The 35-year-old was dropped from the national team for the World Cup and security officials arrested him while he was training at a local club.
He has been accused of tarnishing the reputation of the national team and spreading propaganda against the government.
Kurdish minority people
Qatar was dropped from the World Cup squad for supporting civilians labeled rioters by the Iranian government.
Ghafouri is a member of Iran’s Kurdish minority and has been vocal against the government and in support of his own ethnic group.
Ghafouri, who was part of the Football World Cup team in 2018, has been dropped from the national team this time.
The Iranian team’s refusal to sing the national anthem during the Qatar World Cup match against the England team had caused great shocks.
Refusal to sing the National Anthem
Star player Ghafouri has been arrested after the Iranian administration warned of severe consequences if the Iranian team refused to sing the national anthem again in Friday’s match against Wales.
Many of Iran’s political leaders are commenting that refusing to sing the national anthem is an insult to the country.
