The New York Times reported that Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei issued an order on the 31st (local time) to directly attack Israel. This is in relation to the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, the previous day.

The New York Times quoted Iranian government officials as saying that Khamanei gave this order at an emergency meeting of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) that morning.

According to reports, Commander-in-Chief Khamanei also ordered the drawing up of defensive plans in case Israel or the United States attack Iran as the war escalates along with the attack.

Earlier, Haniyeh had visited Iran the day before to attend the inauguration ceremony of new Iranian President Masoud Pezekian, but was assassinated in an Israeli attack. Khamanei immediately issued a statement, saying, “The criminal Zionist regime (Israel) has martyred our guest,” and “We must consider it our duty to pay the price for the incident that occurred on the territory of the Republic.”

However, according to the media, it is not yet clear how far Iran will attack. Iranian government officials told the NYT that “Iranian military authorities are considering a combined attack using drones and missiles targeting Tel Aviv and Haifa, Israel,” but that “civilian attacks will be avoided.” They also told the NYT that “in order to increase the effectiveness of the attack, they are also considering simultaneously attacking Israel from other fronts such as Yemen, Syria, and Iraq.”
