Iraq and Armenia sign MoU for cooperation in constitutional judiciary

The Federal Supreme Court signed a memorandum of understanding with its Armenian counterpart for cooperation in the field of constitutional justice.

A statement by the Federal Supreme Court received by the (INA) stated that “a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Federal Supreme Court and the Armenian Constitutional Court, which includes finding the necessary ways to develop cooperation in the field of constitutional justice, leading to benefiting from the mutual experiences of the two courts in the field of constitutional justice and in the field of administrative systems followed by them.”
He continued: “This also leads to developing their work and contributing to developing constitutional justice and establishing the principles of adherence to the provisions of the constitution as the national document that includes the type of government system and the rights and freedoms of the general public in order to preserve them and not violate them,” noting that “the two brotherly countries, the Republic of Iraq and the Republic of Armenia, have common historical relations through which this cooperation can be developed.”
Meanwhile, a statement by the Federal Supreme Court stated that “President of the Republic of Armenia Vahagn Khachaturian received the Iraqi delegation headed by the President of the Federal Supreme Court of the Republic of Iraq, Judge Jassim Mohammed Abboud. The President welcomed the visit of the delegation headed by Jassim Mohammed Abboud to Armenia, and pointed to the depth of the humanitarian and historical relations between the two brotherly countries.
The Armenian President said, “The relations between our countries are developing dynamically, and mutual visits at various levels are continuing,” noting, “Iraq was an important event. During our discussions, we mentioned that we have great opportunities and potential in terms of developing relations between our countries, especially the great untapped potential in the economic field.”
For his part, the Chief Justice of the Federal Supreme Court expressed his thanks for the welcome, stressing that “our visit to Armenia stems from the depth of relations between the two countries and the complete agreement on humanitarian issues.”
He continued, “Iraq has achieved great accomplishments in the field of democratic construction through holding elections, whether for the Iraqi Council of Representatives or for provincial councils,” noting that “preparations are underway to elect the Kurdistan Regional Parliament despite all the difficult circumstances that the country has gone through, and that this indicates the sound democratic transformation and the implementation of the constitution in a way that guarantees this democratic construction and the preservation of the constitution and not violating it, as it is the national document that guarantees the unity of the country and through which the rights and freedoms of the Iraqi people are preserved.”
According to the statement, the two sides stressed “the role of the constitutional judiciary in establishing the principles of democracy, preserving the rights and freedoms of peoples, and building constitutional institutions that lead to establishing correct democratic principles. The two sides also exchanged views on the similarities between state institutions in Armenia and Iraq and the importance of ongoing reforms.”
He said, “During the conversation, reference was made to opportunities for developing cooperation between the two countries in the political, economic, cultural and other fields. From this standpoint, the need to take consistent steps to realise the current potential for cooperation was emphasised.”
