Iraq comments on the kidnapping of an Iraqi citizen in Syria

Iraq confirmed that it is following up on the case of the kidnapping of an Iraqi citizen from Basra in the Syrian province of Homs since last August.

The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement: “The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs is closely following the case of the kidnapping of a citizen from Basra Governorate in the village of Al-Bayadiyah in the city of Homs on August 24, 2024.”

The Foreign Ministry added: “Our embassy in Damascus, through the Chargé d’Affaires, is conducting intensive contacts with the highest security authorities in the Syrian Arab Republic to ensure his release as soon as possible.”

The ministry confirmed that “the competent Syrian authorities have arrested a number of people for their involvement in the kidnapping incident, and the security authorities are continuing their tireless efforts to reach the kidnapped Iraqi citizen and ensure his safety.”

The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its appreciation for the continued cooperation of the Syrian authorities, stressing its “commitment to following up on this case until the Iraqi citizen is released and returned to his homeland safely.”

The Ministry stressed the importance of Iraqi residents and visitors communicating with the Iraqi embassy in Damascus, and not going to unsafe places in Syrian regions, to preserve their safety.
