Iraqi Minister of Electricity, Ziyad Ali Fadhil, announced that “electric power production has reached 27,000 megawatts for the first time in the country.”

The Iraqi Ministry of Electricity stated in a statement that “the Minister of Electricity announced that the electrical system has achieved an unprecedented accomplishment in the rates of electrical energy production, exceeding the production of 27 thousand megawatts, as the loads of the system and its stations record production rates that it had not achieved before.”

The statement added that this came “as a result of intensive and meticulous work on periodic and emergency maintenance programs, and extracting the generating energies that were lost from the operating generating units, as the ministry has been working since the end of last summer on clear and specific programs, and has set implementable ceilings, which has enabled it to keep pace with the challenges, achieving an increase of 3,000 megawatts over what the system achieved at this time last summer.”

Iraq has been suffering from a shortage of electricity supplies since 1990, after the United Nations imposed a blockade on Iraq. The problem worsened after 2003, and the hours of power outages increased to long hours. The country depends on gas supplies from Iran to operate some power stations.
