/ Minister of Industry and Minerals Khaled Battal Al-Najm described, on Sunday, the handmade carpet industry as “economically unfeasible”, stressing the need to review and reconsider the status of some factories and companies operating in this field due to the futility of their continuation.

This came in a press conference held by the Minister on the sidelines of his visit to the handmade carpet factory, the Kadhimiya blanket factory, and the wool factory located in the city of Kadhimiya in the capital, Baghdad.

The Minister stated in a press conference that the hand-woven carpet industry has a special feature in preserving heritage and the weaving craft, but it is not economically viable, indicating that the Al-Kadhimiya blanket factory was established in 1965 and operates with old technology, and that its products are unable to compete with imported counterparts.

He also stressed the need to review and reconsider the status of some factories and companies due to the futility of their continuation, in accordance with what was stated in the government program and the objectives of the Supreme Committee for Restructuring Public Companies in the ministries, which is headed by the Prime Minister, while preserving the rights of employees therein.
