Researchers have discovered eight ancient cave sites featuring rock art dating back at least 15,000 years in south-west Ireland, suggesting the first humans to reach the island walked across a land bridge from modern-day Wales.
The Lost Land Bridge Across the Irish Sea
During the most recent Ice Age, much of the British Isles lay beneath a vast continental glacier. That monumental ice sheet lowered sea levels, laying bare a corridor between modern-day Pembrokeshire and the south-east tip of Ireland around Rosslare.
According to rock expert Dr George Nash, from Liverpool University, who coordinated the Lost Land Bridge Project, the opportunities presented by this pathway proved irresistible to early hunter-gatherers.
The exposed route formed a coastal plateau stretching roughly 46 miles coast-to-coast. Summertime temperatures hovered between -10°C and -20°C, yet the landscape sustained hardy sedges, mosses, and lichens. Those plants fed large herbivores including wild horses, mammoths, bison, and reindeer, creating a viable ecosystem for human predators.

The discovery of the eight south-west Irish cave sites pushes back the timeline of human presence on the island significantly. The rock art dates back at least 15,000 years, landing roughly 5,000 years before the previously established oldest examples of human habitation in Ireland.
Nash assembled a multi-disciplinary team comprising academics from University College Dublin and the University of Adelaide, alongside researchers from Dubai, Wales, and Portugal. Their combined investigation points directly to cross-channel migration from the Welsh coast.
The researchers argue that human movement across the glacial corridor was virtually inevitable. Given the proximity and the presence of migrating herds, early groups simply followed the food sources westward across the exposed sea floor.
