Leave everything and go live in one of those beautiful landscapes that John Ford portrayed in ‘The Quiet Man’. That is, more or less, the proposal that the Irish government has just launched to revitalize some of its less populated rural regions. Specifically, it offers 80,000 euros to those who purchase a home on one of its islands that lacks a land connection (bridges or roads) with the rest of the country.

Most of these islands are off the coast of Donegal, Mayo (this, albeit inland, is where Cong, the Innisfree from the film, is), Galway and Cork. The Government, in its plan ‘Our living islands’, ensures that, although their economies have traditionally depended on tourism, agriculture and fishing, “there are opportunities for diversification”. In addition, they highlight “island communities are experts in self-sufficiency and have a strong sense of community and identity.” It also promises that as part of the plan, in ten years it will improve medical services, mobility and connectivity for all of them.

The population of these islands varies considerably, from two people on some of the smaller islands to over 700 on Árainn (Inis Mór), the largest of the Aran Islands, in County Galway. To receive the subsidy you can choose any of them, although yes, the aid can only be dedicated to the restoration of a property. In addition, it must already be owned by the beneficiary of the aid, be built before 1993 and have been empty at the time of acquisition for at least two years.

The program dedicated to attracting new neighbors for Ireland will come into force on July 1 and is a continuation of the one that already exists to revitalize rural areas in the interior, in which the Government offers subsidies of up to a maximum of 30,000 euros for rehabilitation of vacant real estate for use as a primary private residence.
