Irishman Sam Bennett wins in the sprint on the first stage

He won the first stage of the Tour de San Juan in Argentina.

Irishman Sam Bennett (Bora Hansgrohe) won the first stage of the San Juan cycling tour in western Argentina on Sunday. Bennett, 32, won in the sprint ahead of Dane Michael Morkov and Italian Giacomo Nizzolo, in 3 h 19 min 16 sec and 143.9 km of racing to take the lead in the general classification.

He won his first stage victory of the season, the 60th of his career, five months after winning the third stage of the Vuelta in 2022. The Belgian Remco Evenepoel does not appear in the top ten of the stage, according to the provisional classification. The wearer of the world champion’s rainbow jersey is the last winner, in 2020, of the Tour de San Juan which had not taken place since because of the Covid.
