In 2019, Iron Man died in “Avengers: Endgame.” But now actor Robert Downey Jr. is returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In 2008, Robert Downey Jr. slipped into his signature role of Iron Man for the first time and thereby founded the MCU as Tony Stark. In total, he appeared in ten Marvel films before his much-mourned death in “Avengers: Endgame” in 2019.

But now Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios, has a surprise in store for fans. At the Comic-Con trade fair in San Diego, he gave an outlook on the coming years – and made a name for himself with an announcement.

Robert Downey Jr. will actually appear in the two upcoming “Avengers” films. However, he will not return as Iron Man, but will play the villain Victor von Doom, better known as Doctor Doom.

Robert Downey Jr. made sure to be there for the announcement. He personally unveiled the face of his new film character on stage. In addition to a green suit and a matching shirt, the Hollywood star also wore a silver mask, which he eventually ripped off his face to thunderous applause. “New mask, same task,” the 59-year-old said to his fans.

The first of the two planned films with Robert Downey Jr. will be called “Avengers: Doomsday”, while the second installment will be called “Avengers: Secret Wars”. The German release dates are currently set for April 29, 2026 and May 5, 2027.

Robert Downey Jr. is not the only well-known name that Kevin Feige used to fuel anticipation for the upcoming Marvel films. Directors Anthony and Joe Russo will also be working for the MCU again. The brothers have already directed the “Avengers” films “Infinity War” and “Endgame”.
