On June 29, a police prisoner was released from the Gomel women’s colony Irina Shchasnaya. Svaboda learned about this from a woman who was appealing her sentence. On July 3, it emerged that she had left Belarus.

Near the prison on June 29, relatives and friends met Irina who gave her double congratulations: the day of the woman’s release coincided with her birthday, when she turned 37 years old. Of them, Irina Shchasnaya spent 3 years and 7 months behind bars.

Before her arrest in November 2020, Iryna Shchasnaya edited several Telegram channels, including My Country Belarus.

The activist was sentenced under Part 1 of Article 13 and Part 2 of Article 293 of the Criminal Code (“Preparation for participation in mass riots”) to 4 years imprisonment.

Iryna Shchasnaya was tried in the Mogilev Regional Court together with opposition activists Pavel Severyants, Zmitr Kozlov, Yevhen Afnagel, Pavel Yukhnevich, Maksim Vinyarsky and Andrey Voynich, who are still behind bars.

According to the ex-convict, who was serving a sentence together with Irina Shchasnaya, the activist started having health problems in prison. The woman wrote a request for pardon, but she did not receive a positive response. She left, having fully served the appointed judge Irina Lanchava term.
