The case of a twenty-three-year-old man who died today, August 17, from the bite of a violin spider in Salento has raised fears and questions about an animal in Italy. How to identify a violin spider? Where do you live? What should you do if an arachnid bites you?

“Genesis of the violin spider is a fairly frequent occurrence, we talk about several dozen cases a year, but it is. Death as a consequence is rare and extraordinary“, explains Massimo Andreoni, scientific director of the Italian Society of Sociology and Tropical Diseases and full professor at Tor Vergata University of Rome, to Adnkronos Salute.

How to identify the violin spider, where it lives

As the Niguarda hospital in Milan reminds us, the typical violin spider is yellow-brown in color, with long legs. Sizes vary between 7 mm and 9 mm, females are generally larger than males. In Italy, the violin spider generally lives indoors during the winter, because it feels bad with low temperatures. In the summer, you can also see it outside. During the day, it tends to stay in holes and holes, behind furniture or basic boxes. It also tends to hide in clothes, in folds of curtains or even in shoes. At night, the movements become more frequent.

What happened with eating, what needs to be done

The ‘tata’ violin spider initially showed no symptoms. Then, redness appears with itching and tingling. Within 2-3 days the situation can worsen in principle, until the formation of ulcers on the wound in which anaerobic bacteria can multiply. A bitten subject may have a fever and skin rash, along with a course that can lead to muscle damage, kidney damage and bleeding. Also, in some cases, treatment in a hyperbaric chamber may be necessary.

In the case of a spider bite, the first step requires washing the wound thoroughly with soap and water. It is important to note whether the lesion tends to become red with a black central part. It may be useful to catch the spider and keep it, even if it is killed: the head analysis under the microscope shows the presence of 6 eyes instead of 8, as is typical for all other spiders.

Gemelli Polyclinic of Rome reminds that in rare cases in which serious lesions occur (necrosis) the treatment is support, symptoms and medication (antibiotics, cortisone). In other rare cases, surgical debridement of the wound may be necessary.

In most cases the bite causes local phenomena of little clinical importance (redness, itching, irritation) and therefore it is not appropriate to wonder about going to the emergency room. Contact a Poison Control Center explaining the circumstances of exposure and any signs and symptoms present; only in follow-up and in some cases medical examination may be necessary for which general practitioners
