However, some of the health claims of fish oil are controversial, and taking supplements may pose health risks for some people.

It has now been found that fish oil supplements may benefit older people with the APOEε4 gene, which increases the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

In a study published in the journal JAMA Network Openfound that individuals with this gene who were given fish oil supplements had a reduction in the breakdown of nerve cells.

But in people who do not have this gene, the benefits of nutritional supplements have not been observed.

“This study reveals the potential for personalized nutritional interventions based on genetic predisposition,” said neuroscientist Steve Allder, MD.

A gene that increases the risk of a disease

There are several factors that can increase the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. This is:

– age;

– smoking;

– unhealthy diet and/or overweight;

– insufficient physical activity;

– family history and genetics.

Several genes have been identified to be associated with Alzheimer’s disease, the best known of which is the APOE gene.

One version of this gene, APOEε4, increases the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, especially in those whose parents both had the APOEε4 gene.

Why can fish oil be beneficial?

“Carriers of the APOEε4 gene have a higher risk of Alzheimer’s disease and may have a different metabolic or inflammatory response to omega-3 fatty acids. This gene is associated with increased brain inflammation and oxidative stress, which omega-3 fatty acids are known to reduce,” Allder explained.

It is recommended to consult a doctor

The study authors do not recommend fish oil supplements for all older adults, but say they may help reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease in those with the APOEε4 gene. In addition, the researchers emphasize that larger clinical trials are needed to confirm their findings.

“I don’t think it’s harmful, but I wouldn’t say you need to eat fish oil to prevent dementia,” said senior study co-author Lynne Shinto, a professor of neurology at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) School of Medicine, of people without the APOEε4 gene.

Nutritionists say fish oil is generally safe, but people should only take it if advised by a doctor.

“Contraindications are always a concern, so I recommend that clients consult with their doctors before taking supplements. While they are generally safe, their effects are age- and dose-dependent, especially for those with 2 copies of the APOE4 gene,” said registered dietitian Molly Rapozo.

She added that it is better to increase the amount of omega-3 fatty acids in your diet, which means eating more cold-water fish such as salmon, sardines or Atlantic mackerel.
