Ahead of President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on the 20th, American society was engulfed in security anxiety due to two suspected terrorist incidents that occurred one after another since the first day of the new year. On the 1st, in New Orleans, southern Louisiana, at least 15 people were killed and 35 injured in a car and gun attack committed by retired soldier Shamsuddin Jabar (42, photo). On the same day, an electric car exploded in front of the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas, western Nevada, killing one person and injuring eight others.
American society is shocked by the circumstances in which Jabar, who was killed by police at the scene of the terrorist attack, followed the Sunni extremist terrorist group Islamic State (IS). This is because a former soldier who was born in the United States and even served in Afghanistan sacrificed a large number of innocent citizens. IS occupied approximately one-third of Syria and Iraq in June 2014 and declared the establishment of a state. Until 2017, it had gained notoriety for its brutal rule based on extreme Islamism, but was assessed to have virtually collapsed around 2019 due to attacks by Kurdish militias and the U.S. military. However, as the situation in Syria, where 53 years of hereditary dictatorship was recently brought to an end by rebels, became unstable, concerns were growing that IS remnants could increase their influence again.
Currently, there is a possibility that the New Orleans and Las Vegas incidents are linked in the United States. This is because all of the vehicles used were rented through a car sharing app called ‘Turo’. Investigative authorities are also investigating whether the two incidents are linked and the possibility of additional terrorism. Bloomberg News diagnosed that “security concerns in the United States are growing.”

According to CNN and the Washington Post (WP), Jabar drove a white Ford F-150 electric pickup truck at around 3:15 a.m. Central time and rushed into citizens who were celebrating the New Year on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. After getting out of the vehicle, a gun was fired.
According to YouTube videos he posted in the past, Jabar was born and raised in Beaumont, Texas. While serving in the Army from 2007 to 2020, he was deployed to Afghanistan and received numerous medals, but was discharged due to drunk driving. He worked at Deloitte, a consulting firm, but suffered from financial difficulties due to two divorces and business failure.
The truck that Jabar used in the terrorist attack had a flag symbolizing IS. Hours before the attack, Jabar posted a video on social media saying his actions were “inspired by ISIS,” according to the FBI. Circumstances were also revealed that he rented a shared accommodation and manufactured an improvised explosive device (IED). There was also testimony that he had converted to Islam.
Authorities are not ruling out the possibility that this terrorist attack was an organized crime. WP reported that authorities are investigating a video showing at least three men and one woman planting explosives near the site of the attack. The Associated Press also reported that several improvised explosive devices, including two bombs for remote detonation, were discovered around the site.
Immediately after the attack, President-elect Trump told TruthSocial that the suspect was an illegal immigrant, saying, “What I said about (illegal immigrant) criminals being much worse than American criminals turned out to be true.” Although the claim was proven to be incorrect after Jabar’s identity was confirmed, there is an analysis that it is likely that he will strengthen anti-immigration policies in some way immediately after taking office.
● “Trump and Tesla… “Attention to political terrorism”
At approximately 8:40 a.m. Western time, about 5 hours after the New Orleans terror attack, Tesla’s electric pickup truck ‘Cybertruck’ exploded at the entrance to the Trump Hotel in Las Vegas. The accident vehicle was a new 2024 model, and smoke suddenly rose in front of the hotel, followed immediately by a large explosion. The deceased was a passenger in the vehicle, and authorities have not yet confirmed his identity. Mortars for fireworks, gas cans, and camp fuel cans were also found in the back of the vehicle.
Authorities are not ruling out the possibility of political terrorism, given that the explosion site was a hotel owned by President-elect Trump’s family and that Tesla’s CEO is Elon Musk, the president-elect’s closest associate.
Musk claimed through X that the car explosion was “likely an act of terrorism.” He also wrote that it “may be connected in some way” to the New Orleans terror attack.
