France is one of the rare countries to legally recognize the existence of forced suicides, which mainly affect women. There law of July 30, 2020 introduced the offense of harassment by a spouse or ex-spouse having “led the victim to commit suicide or attempt suicide”. An offense punishable by ten years in prison and a fine of 150,000 euros.

The spiral of violence which leads to forced suicide is similar to that observed in cases of feminicide. A relationship begins normally but, gradually, the abuser controls his victim by denigrating them, making them feel guilty and isolating them. Psychological abuse and physical violence ensue. Unlike a homicide, where the attacker kills his victim, in the context of a forced suicide, it is the victim who ends his own life because he sees no way out.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, there were 759 cases of suicide or attempted suicide in France following domestic violence in 2022, and 684 in 2021; they are mainly women. For the same periods, 122 and 118 feminicides were recorded respectively.

In this short video, we explain the mechanics of forced suicides through the story of Odile Nasri, 50, who ended her life after ten years of domestic violence.
