A decision that some doctors consider arbitrary has triggered a new controversy within the field of health. Everything was generated from the cancellation of several Official Mexican Standards (NOM) of medical care. But now the important thing is to know the position of the authorities and their arguments.
As a recap, the Standardization Committee of the Ministry of Health (SSa), chaired by Hugo López-Gatell, was in charge of canceling more than 30 NOMs that are directly related to the care of multiple diseases. It is not yet a definitive action but the request has already been made.
In this regard, the official indicated that in Mexico there is a guarantee of comprehensive medical care for the more than 35,000 defined diseases, regardless of whether there are NOMs or not, for which they are not a condition or requirement.
The foregoing, in relation to the publication in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF)this June 1, of the supplement to the National Quality Infrastructure Program 2023, for all standardizing authorities of the Federal Public Administration (APF).
In the document, the SSa, through the Committee for Standardization and Public Health, registered the proposal to cancel various Official Mexican Standards.

He called on the population not to be confused by those who disseminate false information, with the purpose, on the one hand, of misrepresenting the work done by the federal government and, on the other, protecting commercial or corporate interests that are in the texts of the NOM issued in previous administrations.
He stressed that it is not an immediate cancellation of the rules and it is “very likely that those who spread these lies today have some direct commercial interest in this type of company. It would be worthwhile for an investigation to be carried out on what was the link of this type of social protagonists in the manufacture of the norms or the intentions of perpetuating this scheme of dedication to private interests instead of protecting, defending and promoting the public interest” .
Finally, he said that what is important in our country is that, in fact, the Health sector provides comprehensive medical care for various infectious diseases such as tuberculosis and cholera, or chronic diseases such as breast or cervical cancer, obesity and diabetes, among others. In addition to services to promote breastfeeding, promotion and education for health in food matters.
And what are NOMs?
The NOMs are technical regulations of obligatory observance issued by the competent agencies. They are intended establish the characteristics that processes or services must meet when they may constitute a risk to the safety of people or harm human health.
The NOM on Prevention and Health Promotion, once approved by the Committee National Advisory for Standardization of Disease Prevention and Control (CCNNPCE)are issued and published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) and, as it deals with health matters, they enter into force the day after their publication.
