Is the new SE worth it?

Apple has entered through the front door in 2022. The apple company has barely let a couple of months of this year run before presenting new products, among them, a iPad Air and the third generation of the firm’s mid-range phone: the iPhone SE, which fell into the hands of ABC exactly a week ago. The terminal, with a reduced screen and almost ‘retro’ design, has little to do with the iPhone 13, the large ships of the company. However, that does not imply that whoever decides to go for the small and light terminal is going to make a mistake. On the contrary, it is possibly the best option available within the Apple ecosystem for the ordinary userwhich doesn’t need the best camera or the biggest panel, just a competent phone at as low a price as possible.

For those who are used to large high-end phones, or use an iPhone 13 Pro Max on a daily basis, as is our case, holding the SE is like riding in a time machine. In appearance, it is a terminal that is very (very) reminiscent of the old iPhone 7. During the tests, therefore, we have gone from using a huge device, with a 6.7-inch screen, with one of the best cameras on the market, great autonomy and facial recognition, to a much smaller and more limited device.

Like an iPhone 7

Unlike Apple’s recent big smartphones, the SE doesn’t have facial recognition technology. Instead, the apple firm recovers its fingerprint reader, the Touch ID. A very useful tool that we have missed a lot in this newspaper during the last two years of the pandemic. Basically, because unlocking the mobile phone with a mask using the face reader has been an impossible mission with Apple terminals until just a few days ago. And making payments through the mobile in the store is much more inconvenient when you have to be careful to enter a code on the screen.

Furthermore, the screen of the SE, as we say, is very small, staying at 4.7 inches. In addition, we find the classic black stripes on the top and bottom of the panel that waste a lot of surface. Bearing this in mind, it is clear that this is not the most suitable mobile for all those who are used to consuming streaming content on their mobile. Not even to play video games.

However, accustomed to using a large smartphone, carrying one in your pocket that barely weighs 144 grams is appreciated. The grip is very good and it is very comfortable to use.

The same chip as the iPhone 13

Indeed, the iPhone SE and the iPhone 13 have nothing to do with it. The only thing they share is the chip A15 Bionic, manufactured by Apple itself. Thanks to this, the device works smoothly at all times, regardless of the number of applications that we have open, we have not noticed any problems during the tests.

This ‘engine’ also allows the photos and videos that the mobile is capable of taking to be of good quality. And that we are talking about a device that only has a 12 MP sensor on the back. No double or triple camera, which is what we are used to seeing in terminals of this range launched by other companies.

Although the device offers reasonably good performance at the photographic level, this does not imply that the results that we can expect are close to those of the iPhone 13 Pro Max or any of its little brothers. And nothing happens either. If we settle for a compliant camera, capable of capturing good images to upload to social networks or share with friends, with the SE the user has enough.

Regarding storage, the terminal is available in three different versions, 64, 128 and 256 GB. Here, already, depending on the needs of each one or if you have contracted a cloud storage service. Regarding the battery life, reaches the full day, but hardly. It all depends on what the device is used for and what is meant by normal use. However, if you get hold of the terminal, we recommend that you have the charger nearby, just in case.

Worth?

The iPhone SE is a competent terminal, with a great chip and compatible with iOS 15. Apple has also promised that users will be able to continue updating the operating system without problems for “the next few years”. Bearing this in mind, and that the price starts from the 529 eurosis possibly the best terminal that an ordinary user who does not need the best camera on the market or the largest screen can acquire.

If what you want is a ‘premium’ mobile, without a doubt, the most advisable thing is to buy an iPhone 13 or even an iPhone 12. Two families of ‘smartphones’ capable of meeting all expectations. Although, obviously, it will be necessary to scratch the pocket more.
