“Our vision… when a pilot gets up in the morning, he will simply open the application on his cell phone, say a few sentences and if the system detects fatigue, it will tell him – ‘Don’t come to the flight today,'” said Prof. Verd Aharonson about the research for the purpose of developing a device that will detect fatigue The pilot only by his voice.

The ynet website publishes that the Afka College of Engineering and the Air Medicine Unit are developing a tool that will test the fatigue level of pilots using voice processing. The initial phase is already behind us and its results are promising.

“There is a lot of global interest in fatigue, because it is something that kills,” said Prof. Aharonson of the reason she built an ultrasonic fatigue measurement tool. “This is one of the most difficult problems in aviation, but it is not only fatal for pilots, but also for drivers, people who work with dangerous machines, and in all professions that require a lot of concentration, mental strength, quick thinking and challenging performance.”

More in-

Prof. Aharonson that her research has an advantage over studies because “mostly researchers take a group of volunteers or students, and tell them how much to sleep or not to sleep and at what time of day to record, but it’s not really controlled.” Compared to those studies, the advantage of the current study is in the collaboration with YARPA (aeromedical unit). – “We joined an existing annual workshop that every pilot does for several days anyway, and tests him in states of fatigue, which creates for us a controlled laboratory in which we know exactly what It’s happening, and our data is much more accurate and high-quality.”

In this workshop, “the pilots go through various cognitive and activity tests and check what happens after 6 hours of sleep, up to 12 hours of no sleep, 24 hours of no sleep, and so on,” Aaronson explains and detailed how the sample is performed on their part. “We took voice samples from the entire group, which includes pilots from different squadrons – transport, fighter, and so on, who recorded themselves during the workshop with good recording devices, and analyzed how, with the help of the voice, they distinguish between a pilot who slept a night and a pilot who didn’t sleep a night, two nights or three nights or not Sleep well.”
