New Delhi: The federal government has stepped in in an effort to introduce a new collection system at customs. According to the current practice, a vehicle passing through a toll plaza is required to pay the full toll of the road even if it is not fully traveled on the highway.
As an alternative to this practice, the federal government is trying to introduce a toll system based on how far a vehicle has traveled on the highway.
Once the vehicle enters the toll plaza, the GPS fitted to the vehicle will begin to calculate the distance that the vehicle will travel on the highway. When the vehicle completes its journey on the highway, the total distance traveled will be calculated and deducted from the bank account.
This collection is practiced in many European countries, including Germany and Russia. Experimental efforts are currently underway in India.
