Is the San Andreas Fault responsible for the cracks in Los Angeles and Hermosillo?

The San Andreas Fault is a large fracture in the Earth’s crust that extends for approximately 1,300 kilometers in the state of California, United States.

It is one of the best-known and most active faults in the world, and marks the boundary between two major tectonic plates: the Pacific Plate and the North American Plate.

The southern segment of the San Andreas Fault has not significantly released tension in more than 300 years, so a powerful and destructive earthquake dubbed “The Big One” is expected to occur at some point.

The recent cracks recorded in Los Angeles have given rise to rumors that “The Big One” has occurred, however, experts’ versions so far indicate that they are a consequence of:

  • A poor drainage system after the rains recorded in Rancho Palos Verdes
  • The continued extraction of groundwater in the area, which would have damaged the soil infrastructure

In the case of the ditch in Hermosillo, Sonora, residents of the area asked for help from the authorities of the Municipal Civil Protection Unit, who promised to go to the site soon.

However, due to the remoteness of the San Andreas Fault, it is presumed unlikely that the trench is a result of its activity.
