OpenAI has temporarily blocked the use of the artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT following an investigation by the Italian government’s data protection authority. The popular artificial intelligence app is suspected of violating the country’s privacy policy.

The authority, also known as Garante, accused OpenAI of supporting Microsoft in failing to verify the age of ChatGPT users who are supposed to be 13 or older.

ChatGPT has “the absence of any legal basis that justifies the massive collection and storage of personal data” to “train” the chatbot, Magarante said.

OpenAI has 20 days to respond with a solution or risk a fine of up to 20 million euros or 4% of its annual worldwide turnover. OpenAI said it disabled the chatbot for users in Italy at the request of the guarantee.

“We actively work to reduce personal data in our AI systems trust like ChatGPT because we want our AI to learn about the world, not about individuals,” OpenAI added.

Italy, which temporarily restricted ChatGPT’s use of local users’ personal data, became the first Western country to take action against the AI-powered chatbot.

“We expect all companies active in the European Union to respect the data protection rules of the European Union. The enforcement of the General Data Protection Regulation is the responsibility of the data protection authorities of the European Union,” said the spokesperson of the European Commission.

ChatGPT is estimated to have reached 100 million monthly active users in January, just two months after launching, making it the fastest-growing consumer app in history, according to UBS research published last month.
