On Saturday Isaak will represent Germany at the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö. Opinions about the singer vary among the fans who traveled to Sweden.
A great burden rests on the young singer Isaak. After several last and penultimate places at the Eurovision Song Contest in recent years, the German candidate wants to attack the top places at the competition in Malmö this year. With “Always on the Run” he presents a ballad and wants to heat up the audience in the Malmö Arena with a fiery stage show.
The bookmakers now see the East Westphalian in a better position than before the semi-final, in which Isaak competed out of competition. But what do ESC fans from all over the world think about the former street musician’s chances of winning? t-online asked her in front of the arena in Malmö.
“If he doesn’t end up in the top 10, it will be a tragedy”
Die ESC-Fans Jay and Sarah have traveled to Sweden from the UK. They watched Isaak’s performance in the semi-finals and are fans of the German singer. “Absolutely incredible, he’s amazing,” says Jay, who has had his hair styled with an orange-green mohawk. “We loved Lord of the Lost last year,” adds Sarah. “But Isaak absolutely doesn’t deserve to end up in last place.”
Jay particularly likes the East Westphalian singer’s “powerful” voice: “If we had to decide based on that alone, he would end up in my top 5,” he says. “If he doesn’t finish in the top 10, it would be a tragedy for this competition!”
“Isaak will not break the German curse”
Phil even traveled from Australia to watch the Eurovision Song Contest. He is also looking forward to Isaak’s performance on Saturday – but he is not as enthusiastic as other fans in Malmö. “He was good. His voice is very powerful,” he says. He also finds the German candidate’s stage show very interesting. “In Australia many people have a fire pit in their garden. Isaak’s show reminded me of that.”
However, Phil doesn’t believe that Isaak can break the German curse of the past few years and end up in one of the top places. “His song doesn’t stand out among the other candidates. That’s why he won’t have a chance to get away from last or second to last place,” says the Australian. “He will not break the German curse.”
“The best German candidate since Lena Meyer-Landrut”
They have completely different opinions Sonny from the Faroe Islands and Linda from Denmark. “I really liked the staging of his song,” says Sonny. “It was so simple and yet conveyed a lot of feelings.” He also thinks that Isaak conveys a lot of feelings with his singing performance.
Linda makes a big prediction: “Isaak is the best German candidate since Lena’s ‘Satellite’,” says the Dane. However, she doesn’t think he has any good chances. Sonny thinks that will give Isaak a place in the top 10. “No, he won’t end up that high,” says Linda. “But he will definitely end up in the top 15.”
“A good singer, but not a good performer”
The Dutch Cindy and Hans also have an opinion about Isaak: “He’s a good singer, but not a good performer,” explains Cindy. That is also important for competition. “He needs to have more fun on stage.”
