Isala Science Evening Celebrates Research and Innovation

The Isala Science Evening was a night of celebration for groundbreaking research and innovation at the hospital. Michèle Blom, Chairman of the Board of Directors, opened the evening with an inspiring speech about the importance of science in shaping the future of Isala. “It means we can do more. It makes certain things easier thanks to AI, for example. And science makes it possible to collaborate across hospital boundaries with other hospitals, universities and colleges. I am proud that we invest so much time, energy and effort in science. The ambition is to continue to do this and to go even further,” she said.

The highlight of the evening was the excellent program at Isala, where researchers collaborate with universities and colleges to further their research. Gynecologist Arnold Jan Kruse and hospital pharmacist Peter ter Horst shared their research as part of the excellence program. Nurse researchers Hanneke Rasing and Marian Winters also emphasized the importance of nursing research in the medical field.

The guest speaker, Prof. Dr. Rogier Hoenders, spoke about the significance of lifestyle medicine and how it can positively impact health. “We only treat once the disease has developed, which is actually disease care. How you go from illness care to actual healthcare is preventable through illness,” he explained.

The evening ended on a high note with the presentation of prizes. Julia Hanevelt received the award for the best video presentation for her research on the long-term outcomes of the treatment of T1 versus T2 colon cancer. Job Leenen and Eline Langius also received audience awards for their impactful research in nursing and radiology, respectively.

The night was particularly special for Julia Hanevelt, who took home three prizes, including the prestigious Kartrekker Prize for her pioneering role in new research at the hospital. Her research into eNose, which can detect metastases of colon cancer in someone’s breath, was highly praised. The Isala Academy organized the Science Evening with financial support from the Science Fund for Medical Specialists Isala (WMI).

The event was a true testament to the dedication and innovation of the researchers at Isala, as they continue to push boundaries and make advancements in the field of medicine.]
