75% say they “don’t understand” and oppose the nomination of lawmakers involved in slush funds

TBS TV news site JNN reported on the 7th that the approval rating of Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s cabinet hit 51.6% immediately after its inauguration.

According to JNN, the latest public opinion poll on the Ishiba Cabinet, which was launched on the 1st, showed that 51.6% supported it and 43.5% did not support it.

This survey cannot be compared uniformly because the method was changed, such as including mobile phones, but JNN pointed out that the approval rating of the previous administrations since the Koizumi cabinet in 2001 was the lowest after the Aso cabinet in 2008.

Among those who said they supported the Ishiba cabinet, the most common reason was “I can have expectations from Prime Minister Ishiba,” accounting for 35%.

On the other hand, among those who answered that they did not support it, the most frequently mentioned question was “because it is a cabinet centered on the Liberal Democratic Party,” reaching 24%. Next is “I can’t wait for the policy” at 23%.

Regarding whether the birth of the Ishiba cabinet will restore political trust lost due to the old Unification Church issue and factional slush fund scandal, 72% responded, “I don’t think so.”

Even among lawmakers who did not list slush funds in the political fund balance report, 75% expressed opposition to the issue of the Liberal Democratic Party’s nomination for the next House of Representatives election, saying, “I do not understand.”

Even among the supporters of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, 65% expressed a negative stance, saying, “I don’t understand.”

Regarding Prime Minister Ishiba’s statement on the timing of the House of Representatives election before taking office, the split was almost tight, with 46% saying “I can understand” and 49% saying “I cannot understand.”

Regarding the desirable appearance of the government after the next House of Representatives election, 49% said, “I expect the government to continue centered around the Liberal Democratic Party,” and 37% said, “I hope to see it replaced with a government other than the Liberal Democratic Party.”

When asked which party they plan to vote for among the proportional representatives in the general election, the Liberal Democratic Party ranked first with 35.6%, the Constitutional Democratic Party ranked second with 18.8%, and 17% said they “don’t know.”

The approval rating for political parties was the Liberal Democratic Party at 33.9%, up 2.9 percentage points from before, followed by the Constitutional Democratic Party at 11.7%, up 6.4 points, Yushinkai at 3.9%, Komeito Party at 2.2%, and the Communist Party at 2.0%.

The JNN poll was conducted on the 5th and 6th targeting 2,339 men and women aged 18 and older across Japan.
