“I want to be clear. There is no deadline” to help US citizens and Afghan collaborators leave Afghanistan. “The effort will continue every day after August 31”, the US secretary of state specified, referring to the date of the withdrawal of the American soldiers. “People who want to leave Afghanistan after US soldiers leave must be able to do so. We will do what we can to make that happen,” he added.

“We will use every diplomatic and economic assistance tool to ensure that those who want to leave Afghanistan after August 31 can do so”, assured Blinken, explaining that the US is planning “how to continue providing consular support to those who want to leave”.

Blinken said at least 4,500 American citizens have been evacuated from Afghanistan and efforts are being made to reach another thousand. In the past 24 hours, another 500 have received instructions “to get to the airport safely”. For about a thousand other US citizens, “we are aggressively trying to reach them through multiple communication channels,” he said.

However, Blinken made it clear that he did not have exact figures, because not all Americans had informed the authorities that they were in Afghanistan. In addition, there are dual nationals and others who may have decided to stay. Another 1,500 people who could be American have left the country.
