Isla Mujeres government strengthens actions to preserve sea turtles

He Municipal government of Isla Mujeresheaded by the mayor Athena Gomez Ricaldecontinues with the firm commitment to preserve and safeguard sea turtles in the present Nesting Season which runs from May to October, through the Sea Turtle Protection and Conservation Program.

The Department of Environment and Ecology reported that a total of 565 sea turtle nests have been protected so far, with the help of the Isla Mujeres Turtle Camp, made up of volunteers and staff from the department. The numbers show that 81 Loggerhead Turtle nests, 477 White Turtle nests, 6 Hawksbill Turtle nests and one unknown species are currently being protected.

Edwin Novelo Ríos, Director of Environment and Ecology, reported that so far this season 65,225 eggs of these species have been protected, with 9,408 eggs of the Loggerhead Turtle, 54,951 of the White Turtle, 797 of the Hawksbill Turtle and 69 of the unknown species.

He added that so far they have released 8,142 hatchlings, which are distributed among 3,000 Loggerhead Turtles, 4,203 White Turtles and 467 Hawksbill Turtles.

The municipal official also highlighted that, with the collaboration of departments, schools and companies, 516 babies have been released.

The Municipal Government has reinforced actions for the preservation of sea turtles, as they are a representative species of Isla Mujeres, in addition to the fact that turtles have a fundamental function in marine life, as they transport nutrients, remove sand from beaches, feed on sponges and jellyfish, thus maintaining control of populations, among other things.
