(24News) The National Assembly has approved the Islamabad Local Government Amendment Bill 2024 by majority vote. According to the new bill, a total of 17 representatives will be elected at the Union Council level.

The bill was presented in the National Assembly by Federal Law Minister Azam Nazir, during the meeting there was a debate between the government and opposition members while Tehreek-e-Insaf walked out of the meeting. The number of representatives elected at the level has been increased. Previously, only the positions of chairman and vice-chairman were in the union council. In the current bill, 15 more representatives will be elected along with the chairman and vice-chairman. In addition to the chairman and vice-chairman, 9 members of the union council will be elected in the union council. One farmer or laborer, one minority and one youth will also be elected at the level, 3 women will also be elected at the level of the Union Council, a total of 17 representatives will be elected at the level of the Union Council.

The meeting of the National Assembly was chaired by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, during which the report of the Standing Committee IT on Telecommunication Appellate Tribunal Authority Bill 2024, the Standing Committee Defense on Cannabis Control and Regulatory Authority Bill 2024, and the report of the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs on the Apostille Bill 2024 were presented. The report was presented by Raja Khurram Nawaz, member of the Standing Committee.

Apart from this, the Standing Committee on Privatization Commission Amendment Bill 2024 presented the report of the Standing Committee on Privatization, Islamabad Local Government Amendment Bill 2024, during the National Assembly session, Prime Minister Nazir Tarar presented the Federal Capital Local Government Amendment Bill 2024 for approval. The Law Minister said that the number of wards will be increased from 6 to 9 under the proposed bill. According to the bill, youth, farmers and technocrats will also be included. Local government elections are going to be held in Islamabad.

When the session of the National Assembly started, the members of Tehreek-e-Insaf walked out, Umar Ayub went out of the House and talked to the media and said that such a big incident has happened in Balochistan, the speaker is running the proceedings of the normal session. Opposition Member of Assembly Atif Khan said that these people are not interested in holding elections, Speaker, get an assurance from the government that they will hold elections on time. He said that the local body elections were held in Islamabad for the last time in 2015, then there were many problems due to differences between the chairman CDA and the mayor, there is no place for those who will be elected to sit.

Government benches indicated delay in local body elections in Islamabad, Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said that the problems caused by the elected local government in 2015 have increased, PTI government has transferred the Ministry of CAD to 6 different departments, New Delhi, London, etc. Want to get closer to the system, there is no problem if there is a delay of two days in the elections.
