The blast ripped thru the Khadija Tul Kubra mosque in the Tarlai Kalan area during Friday prayers, a time of heightened spiritual meaning and communal gathering.

Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif stated that security guards at the mosque attempted to intercept the suspect before he opened fire and detonated his explosives amongst the worshippers. asif further alleged that the attacker had been travelling between Pakistan and Afghanistan, raising concerns about cross-border security.
The Islamic State (ISIL) group claimed responsibility for the attack on its Telegram channel Friday evening, according to Reuters, releasing an image purportedly showing the attacker armed with a gun, his face obscured. An affiliate of ISIL has been previously linked to attacks targeting Pakistan’s Shia minority population.
Footage circulating on social media, verified by Al Jazeera, depicted a scene of devastation inside the mosque, with bloodied bodies lying amidst shattered glass and debris. Islamabad resident Aun Shah shared the heartbreaking news that his father sustained severe injuries in the attack, stating, “He has a hole in his stomach.”
“we strongly condemn this heinous act of terrorism,” stated a spokesperson for the Foreign Office. “The government is committed to protecting the lives and property of all citizens and will take all necessary measures to bring the perpetrators of this attack to justice.”
The Delegation of the european union in Pakistan also condemned all acts of terrorism and extended condolences to the victims’ families.
Pakistan has experienced a history of violent attacks. In November of last year, a suicide bomber detonated an explosive device at the entrance of the Islamabad District Judicial Complex, resulting in at least 12 fatalities and numerous injuries. Further back, in September 2008, a suicide bomber detonated a dump truck at Islamabad’s Marriott hotel, killing at least 63 people and wounding over 250.
