Ankara: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, popularly known as the Caliph of Turkey, has proposed forming an alliance of Muslim countries against Israel. He said that Islamic countries should form an alliance against the threat of Israel’s growing expansionism. His statement came after the killing of a Turkish-American woman who participated in a protest against the expansion of settlements in the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Palestinian and Turkish officials have alleged that the woman died in firing by Israeli soldiers.
Preparations to form an alliance against Israel
“The only thing that can stop Israeli arrogance, Israeli banditry and Israeli government-backed terrorism is a coalition of Islamic countries,” Erdogan said at an event at the Islamic Schools Association near Istanbul. He said Turkey’s recent moves to improve ties with Egypt and Syria were aimed at “maintaining solidarity against the growing threat of expansionism”. He said Israel also threatens Lebanon and Syria.
Türkiye is trying to woo Muslim countries
Erdogan hosted Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in Ankara this week, in an effort to ease the Gaza war and strained relations between the two countries. This was the first time in 12 years that an Egyptian president visited Turkey. In 2020, Turkey launched diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions with several countries, including the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia. Erdogan also said that Turkey would invite Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to its country to reduce tensions. Turkey broke off its relations with Syria after the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011.
Erdogan wants to become the leader of Islamic countries
Erdogan’s attempt is to make himself the leader of Islamic countries. Due to this ambition of his, relations with Saudi Arabia became tense in 2020. Erdogan is also called the new dictator of Turkey. There was also an attempt of military coup during his reign, which he brutally crushed. He also wiped out all his political opponents under the guise of coup. Erdogan supports Pakistan on the Kashmir issue only because it is an Islamic nation.
