The Israelis and Italians qualified for the semi-finals of the Under-20 World Cup on Saturday night in Argentina.
The Israelis caused a stir by beating the Brazilians 3-2 (after extra time) in San Juan. Led 1-0, then 2-1, Israel overthrew Brazil with a goal in added time from Hamza Shibli (93rd), then from Dor David Turgeman (105th). It is the first time since 2015 that a team participating for the first time in this tournament has reached the last four, said the International Football Federation. In the semi-finals on June 8, Israel will face the United States or Uruguay, who meet on Sunday in Santiago del Estero.
Italy, meanwhile, beat Colombia 3-1 with Chelsea midfielder Cesare Casadei scoring in the 6th minute, their sixth of the tournament. The Italians will challenge in the semi-finals the winner of the quarter-final between South Korea and Nigeria, winners in the previous round of the host country. The last edition in 2019 was won by Ukraine. This edition was originally scheduled to take place in Indonesia, but was rescheduled twice, due to Covid and organizational issues.
