Israeli forces arrested dozens of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank on Saturday, July 25, 2026, following a deadly shootout in the village of Tal that left four Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers dead. The military crackdown included raids on approximately 70 homes in Tal, located southwest of Nablus, and further arrests in the northern city of Jenin, the village of Kobar in the Ramallah and el-Bireh Governorate, and the Aqbat Jabr refugee camp in Jericho.
Deadly Confrontation in Tal
The violence began on Friday, July 24, 2026, when armed Israeli settlers approached the village of Tal, which is located near the illegal Israeli settlement of Havat Gilad. Essam Saifi, a local Fatah party leader, reported that 25 to 30 settlers initially attacked the eastern area of town and attempted to break into two houses, prompting residents to confront them. Saifi stated the settlers opened fire, and later returned to attack the western part of town, where a child was struck with a weapon.
Human Rights Watch verified six videos of the incidents, noting that between 6:10 and 6:45 a.m., settlers re-entered Tal from the southwest accompanied by Israeli soldiers. One video shows a physical altercation where settlers kicked a Palestinian man; when two Palestinians attempted to take the settlers’ weapons, gunshots were heard and a Palestinian man fell. Social media footage also shows a standoff where at least two Israelis hit Palestinians with rifle stocks before a Palestinian seized a weapon and was shot dead.
Walid Zidan, the mayor of Tal, stated that residents were simply defending their homes from settlers who intended to attack them.
Israeli Government Response
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to take powerful action
and instructed the army to take a series of forceful steps against terror.
According to Reuters, Netanyahu ordered the demolition of the home of one Palestinian involved in the shooting and announced he would accelerate the approval of more Israeli settlements in the area. He further stated his government would accelerate the legalization of farm outposts—small settlements typically established without state approval—and the establishment of new ones.
Following the incident, Israeli forces imposed a security cordon around Tal and Nablus.
Mass Detentions and Interrogations
On Saturday, Israeli forces arrested nearly 50 Palestinians in Tal, though Mayor Walid Zidan reported that around 70 people from the village were detained and questioned at a field interrogation center established in a local house. Zidan noted that while 10 to 12 people had been released, house raids and army patrols continued.
Broader Context of West Bank Violence
The Palestinian Health Ministry reports that at least 87 Palestinians have been killed by Israelis in the West Bank since the beginning of the year, with 21 of those deaths caused by settlers. Separately, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that as of July 15, 20 Israelis had been injured in the West Bank in 2026.
Meanwhile, UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese described the attacks across the West Bank as “pogroms” and called for an immediate arms embargo and halt to trade with Israel.
Since the 1967 Middle East war, Israel has built hundreds of settlements housing 700,000 Jews on land that Palestinians seek for a future state. These settlements are considered illegal under international law. An estimated 3.3 million Palestinians live alongside these settlers in the West Bank.
