Israel’s air defense system is very complex and operates at multiple levels. At its top level is the Arrow Defense System, developed by Israel’s Aerospace Industries in collaboration with the US Missile Defense Agency. Work on its development started in the late 1980s. The Arrow 1 underwent at least seven tests in the 1990s and was further developed into a lighter missile known as the Arrow 2.

Israel’s Iron Dome, David’s Sling and Arrow Defense System together form a multi-layered defense system. We keep hearing the name of Iron Dome every day, which has shot down thousands of rockets since 2011. But it is effective in stopping drones and short-range threats. After this, Israel has a medium to long range interceptor, known as David Sling. The addition of Arrow 2 missiles to Israel’s air defense system gives Israel the ability to intercept short- and medium-range missiles overhead. Its purpose is to deactivate the incoming missile in the air before it falls.

After the Arrow 2, Israel has also included the advanced Arrow 3, which is aimed at destroying long-range targets in the air. Its rocket can destroy enemy missiles at a speed of Mach 9 (about 11000 km per hour). The Arrow Defense System consists of missile launchers, Green Pine Fire Control Radar (FCR), a Hazelnut Tree Launch Control Center and a Citron Tree Battle Management System. Green Pine radar can detect targets up to a long range of 2400 km and is capable of intercepting 14 targets simultaneously. The radar can hit targets at an altitude of 100 kilometers.

According to NDTV report, the radar continuously keeps an eye on the threats coming towards Israel. As soon as the target is detected, its path, speed and real-time information is sent to the control center. If enemy missiles are seen moving towards cities or military installations, an attack is launched from the system. After launch, the missile moves towards the target at a speed of Mach 9 and if for some reason it fails to attack the target, it can explode within 40 meters of the enemy weapon.
Was used for the first time last year
First tested in 2015, the Arrow 3 is Israel’s newest air defense system to intercept long-range threats. Its first successful experiment was done in November last year. It successfully intercepted and destroyed a ballistic missile launched by the Houthis over the Red Sea in Yemen.
