The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said today that the country is on high alert for a wider conflict after saying it had killed the leader of the Lebanese Shiite movement Hezbollah in Beirut, Hassan Nasrallah, but that it also hoped his death to prompt the group to change its policy, Reuters reported.

“We hope that this will change the actions of Hezbollah,” IDF spokesman Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani said at a press conference after the country’s armed forces announced that they had eliminated Nasrallah, BTA reported.

According to him, it will still take time to reduce the capabilities of Iran-backed Hezbollah.

“Hezbollah” has been carrying out attacks against us for a year. It can be safely assumed that it will continue to carry out attacks against us or that it will try,” said the IDF representative.

Shoshani said there were no new instructions for Israeli civilians, given that most of the country is currently on high alert.

“Hezbollah has been escalating the situation all year. It’s obvious that Iran is behind this. It supports Hamas, it supports Hezbollah and other proxies. They even attacked us directly in April,” he added.

“Are we ready for a wider escalation? Yes. All year we have been in a wide escalation, at war on several fronts. Our forces are on high alert, our intelligence is working and monitoring for such threats,” Lt. Col. Shoshani summarized.
