Ceasefire Extended in Israel-Hamas War, More Hostages Expected to be Released

The ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip will be extended for two more days, according to the Palestinian Authority and the Qatari mediator. While the so-called “humanitarian pause” was due to end early Tuesday, Hamas said an agreement had been reached to extend it by 48 hours under existing terms. At the same time, no official announcement regarding this has been released from the Israeli side.

The ceasefire extension is expected to pave the way for the release of more hostages and prisoners. In addition, the Palestinians in Gaza are expected to receive essential supplies. The Qatari government is actively negotiating a ceasefire in Gaza with the support of the US and Egypt. Regarding the suspension, Qatar Foreign Ministry spokesman Majid Al Ansari said, “An agreement has been reached to extend the humanitarian ceasefire in the Gaza Strip for two more days.”

The conflict began on the 7th of last month, with more than a thousand people killed in an attack by Hamas in Israel. In response, the Israeli army launched a three-pronged attack on the Hamas-held Gaza Strip, resulting in more than 40 thousand deaths, with children, women, and the elderly being the worst hit and deprived of essentials.

According to the ceasefire agreement, Hamas released 13 hostages in its possession, while Israel has released 117 Palestinian prisoners. UN Secretary-General António Guterres said of the pause, “a glimpse of hope and humanity is visible amid the darkness of war.”

The ceasefire extension and the release of hostages bring hope for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
