A blunder due to the extreme tension to which the Israeli military has been subjected for two weeks? The Israeli army said on Sunday that one of its tanks had “mistakenly” hit an Egyptian position on the border between the two countries.

The IDF has surrounded the Gaza Strip since Hamas attacks left nearly 1,400 dead in Israel. The enclave, which has borders with the Jewish state but also Egypt, has been shelled daily for two weeks.

“A short time ago, an Israeli army tank mistakenly hit an Egyptian position near the border in the Kerem Shalom sector,” the army announced in a statement, saying it “deplored” this incident and announcing the opening of an “investigation”.

The Egyptian army reported “light injuries” in its ranks after this strike, without giving the number.

“During the ongoing fighting in the Gaza Strip on Sunday, an Egyptian control tower was hit by shrapnel from a shell mistakenly fired by an Israeli tank, causing minor injuries to members of the border surveillance forces “, indicated the spokesperson for the Egyptian army.

“The Israeli side said it was sorry immediately after this unintentional incident, an investigation is underway,” he added.

A border under tension

Kerem Shalom is a goods crossing point located at the border triangle between Israel, Egypt and the Gaza Strip.

It is located south of the Rafah terminal, between Egypt and Gaza, through which humanitarian aid trucks destined for the suffocated Palestinian territory have been passing since Saturday.

Nearly 4,651 Gazans lost their lives in Israeli bombings, according to the Hamas health ministry. In addition to the bombings, the siege of Gaza has made NGOs fear a humanitarian catastrophe, as hundreds of aid trucks supplied the enclave daily before the conflict.

Egyptian media, citing witnesses, however, reported that the Israeli strike “does not disrupt” the passage of aid.
