The Israeli military confirmed on the 10th that one of the bodies recovered in the Gaza Strip earlier this week was that of 23-year-old hostage Hamza al-Zayadni.

Military authorities announced on this day that the National Institute of Forensic Science and the Israeli police had confirmed the identity and notified the family. Military authorities added that they recovered the bodies of Hamza and his father, Yosef al-Zayadni, from an underground tunnel in the Rafah area and returned them to Israel.

Yosef Al-Zayadni’s identity was immediately confirmed earlier this week. Those who were kidnapped together during Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, were thought to be still alive until this announcement.

The identification of Hamza’s body comes as Israel and Hamas consider a cease-fire agreement that would release remaining hostages and halt fighting in the Gaza Strip. Israel says about a third of the remaining 100 hostages have died, but believes as many as half could have died. The fate of the remaining hostages could increase pressure on Israel to advance negotiations.

The Hostage Family Forum, which represents the hostage family, said Hamza was a nature lover who had a deep affection for animals and was loved by his friends. He left behind a wife and two children.
