Three rockets were fired Saturday night from Syria toward Israel, the Israeli military announced. The announcement comes after a similar rocket launch from Lebanon in recent days and amid rising violence in the Middle East.

One of the rockets “fell in a desert area in the southern part of the Golan Heights,” territory annexed by Israel, the military said in a brief statement, without elaborating.

The military previously said warning sirens sounded in the area.

The new outbreak of violence has been triggered by back-to-back violent raids by Israeli security forces on the crowded Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem’s Old City amid Ramadan and the Jewish Passover and as anger simmers. The firing of dozens of retaliatory rockets into Israel from southern Lebanon and the Gaza Strip – which Tel Aviv blames on members of the Palestinian organization Hamas – has been responded to by the Netanyahu government with strikes by the Israeli air force.
