Israel joins the UN program to ensure future food security

The Ministry of Agriculture takes part in the UN plan to ensure future food security and Israel has joined the UN’s International Convention for the Conservation of Genetic Diversity for Plant Food Production. The treaty is designed to ensure the preservation of 64 crops that are especially important for the future of global food security, including wheat, lentils and potatoes.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Member of Knesset Avi Dichter: “Israel’s accession to this important treaty will make it possible to strengthen national food security in the shadow of the global food and climate crisis.” Dr. Einav Maizilish-Gathi, Director of the Israeli Gene Bank at the Volcanic Institute: “The signing of the agreement will allow us at the national level access to additional genetic sources in order to increase the range of traits available to us when we come to deal with climate change and to ensure food security for the residents of the State of Israel.”
