Khaled El Qaisi, the young Italian-Palestinian researcher in prison in Israel since 31 August has been released. He decided this, at the fifth hearing of an uncharged trial, a court in Rishon le Tzion. El Qaisi, who also has an Italian passport, was released on condition that he remains at the disposal of the authorities for seven days and leaves his passport for safekeeping. It is understood he will go to Bethlehem for the seven days. The news is confirmed by his wife Francesca Antinucci, “for a week he cannot move from the territories”.

Khaled El Qaisi – student of oriental languages ​​and civilizations at Sapienza University, intellectual and translator of books of fundamental importance for Palestinian political and cultural history – was detained for a month without ever being able to see his lawyer in the Petah Tikwa prison. He had been arrested at the Allenby crossing, while returning from Bethlehem, in the Palestinian territories, after a family holiday spent with his paternal relatives. The arrest before the eyes of his wife and 4-year-old son, who had been deprived of money and telephone and left at the border.


Last September 21, the Israeli authorities decided to extend El Qaisi’s detention for another 11 days. The researcher was detained without formal charges being laid against him. Amnesty International was also involved in his case, which revealed that Khaled was subjected to psychological and physical harassment during detention, including “sleep deprivation, threats, verbal abuse and prolonged imposition of stress positions” which, continues Amnesty, “are potentially attributable to a crime under international law.”
