Tel Aviv: After several days of aerial bombardment, Israel has launched a ground attack inside Lebanon. The Israeli Army (IDF) entered Lebanon on the intervening night of Monday-Tuesday. The IDF said early Tuesday morning that its troops had launched “limited, local and targeted ground strikes against Hezbollah targets and infrastructure in southern Lebanon.” The IDF said that these attacks are being carried out on the basis of accurate intelligence.
Israeli army in Lebanon after 18 years
Israeli forces have entered Lebanon for the first time since the 2006 Lebanon War. The IDF says the ground attack, targeting Lebanese villages near the northern border, is being used by Hezbollah to pose an immediate threat to the Israeli community in northern Israel.
The statement further said that the IDF will execute a systematic plan laid out by the General Staff and Northern Command, for which troops have been training and preparing in recent months. The IDF says the Israeli Air Force is assisting the troops in the operation.
Israeli tanks entered Lebanese villages
Al-Jazeera has reported in its report that after the announcement of the ground attack, Israeli army tanks have entered several villages in southern Lebanon. America has also given a statement on Israel’s attack in Lebanon. US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told the press that Israel ‘has informed us that they are currently conducting limited operations targeting limited Hezbollah structures along the border.’
Warning to people to leave Beirut
Meanwhile, IDF spokesman Avichai Adrai issued a statement in Arabic warning people living in the Beirut suburbs to evacuate on Monday night. Fearing an Israeli attack on Lebanon, the Lebanese army started retreating from several positions in southern Lebanon around 9 pm on Monday night.
