It is the office of the Prime Minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, which assures him: Israel wants to prevent the “collapse” of the Palestinian Authority, but demands in exchange a series of commitments on its part such as the end of its “actions against Israel on the international stage.

After the inauguration in January of the government of Benyamin Netanyahu, one of the most right-wing in the country’s history, Israel announced the adoption of sanctions against the Palestinian Authority to make it “pay the price” for its approach. to have the question of the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian Territories examined by the United Nations.

The security cabinet adopted the prime minister’s proposal which plans to act to ‘prevent the collapse of the Palestinian Authority’ but without renouncing Israeli demands that it end ‘its actions against Israel on the international stage’ , Benyamin Netanyahu’s office said in a statement on Sunday.

“Anti-terrorist” operation

Other conditions are formulated as the end of “incitement to hatred in the media and in the education system, the end of subsidies to the families of terrorists and the cessation of construction” in zone C (under the control of Israel) in the occupied West Bank.

The prime minister’s office, however, does not give details of what kind of action Israel plans to take to avoid the collapse of the Palestinian Authority, which wields limited powers over about 40 percent of the West Bank. For their part, the Israeli media evoke in particular the creation of industrial zones for the Palestinians in zone C as well as other economic measures favoring their daily life.

This decision by the security cabinet comes a few days after the end of an Israeli “anti-terrorist” operation in Jenin, in the north of the West Bank, which left 12 dead on the Palestinian side and one dead on the Israeli side.

« Martyrs »

In January, Israel also decided to withhold funds collected for the Palestinian Authority, up to what it paid in 2022 “to terrorists and their families”. The Palestinian Authority pays monthly allowances to the families of Palestinians imprisoned in Israel for carrying out anti-Israeli attacks and to those of those it calls “martyrs”, whether Palestinians who died carrying out anti-Israeli attacks or during clashes with the Israeli army in the West Bank.

Israel had also decided to freeze Palestinian construction projects in certain sectors of this Palestinian territory occupied since 1967 by Israel. Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyeh then denounced, with these sanctions, an attempt to push the Palestinian Authority “to the edge of a financial abyss”.
