The Israeli armed forces stated this Sunday that they discovered a 55-meter tunnel under the Al Shifa hospital, the largest in Gaza, where since Wednesday their troops have been searching for a military base of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said in a statement that they “uncovered a 55-meter-long terrorist tunnel, 10 meters deep beneath the Al Shifa hospital complex.”

The text noted that the tunnel ended in an armored door and explained that “such doors are used by Hamas terrorists to prevent Israeli forces from entering their command centers.”

The duct was discovered in an area of the hospital, under a hangar that contained weapons, including “grenade launchers, explosives and Kalashnikov rifles,” the note detailed, according to the AFP news agency.

The document assured that Israeli soldiers continued to advance into the hospital’s basement.

Israeli troops have been under siege of the hospital since Wednesday, after Israel and the United States warned that there was a command center for Hamas and other allied organizations beneath the site, which was denied by the Islamist group.

The decision motivated the evacuation of a large part of the patients, which was carried out gradually and amid great difficulties, to such an extent that the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that dozens of them were still in the place.

Hamas launched a surprise attack against Israel on October 7 and left about 1,200 dead that day, most of them civilians, taking 240 hostages, including twenty Argentines.

Since then, Israel has bombed the Gaza Strip daily, killing 13,000 people, including more than 5,500 children, according to the latest report released today by Hamas.
