“The building was totally destroyed and brought to the ground,” ElSayed stated after the incident. “Looking at all the buildings adjacent to it, you can imagine the amount of destruction that is in the vicinity.”
The attack on the tower came after Hamas launched a multi-pronged attack, firing thousands of rockets into Israel and sending fighters into the country. The exact number of casualties from the assault on Palestine Tower is yet to be determined.
Israeli authorities claim that their air force targeted two high-rise buildings in Gaza, alleging that these structures housed Hamas “military infrastructure.” However, it remains unclear if the Palestine Tower was one of the buildings mentioned.
This is not the first time that Israel has targeted residential buildings and towers in the densely populated Gaza Strip. These actions, referred to by the Israeli army as “precision strikes,” have often resulted in civilian casualties, as they frequently occur in densely inhabited areas.
Amid concerns of war crimes and crimes against humanity, London-based human rights group Amnesty International has previously raised alarm over Israeli military tactics. The repeated attacks on residential buildings in Gaza demonstrate, according to Amnesty International, a disregard for the lives and well-being of Palestinian civilians.
This attack comes after a similar incident during an 11-day conflict in 2021, where Israel targeted four towers, including one housing the offices of Al Jazeera and The Associated Press.
As the violence in Gaza continues to escalate, international observers call for an immediate end to the hostilities and the resumption of diplomatic efforts to achieve a lasting ceasefire in the region.
