Israeli airstrikes hit a school used by refugees in central Gaza on the 27th (local time), killing dozens of people. Israeli negotiators were preparing to meet with international mediators to discuss a ceasefire with Hamas.

At least 30 people who were evacuated from a girls’ school in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza, were pronounced dead after being taken to Al-Aqsa Hospital, the Associated Press reported. The Israeli military said the airstrike on the school targeted a Hamas command and control center where weapons are stored and attacks are planned.

The Gaza Strip health ministry said more than 100 people were injured in Israeli airstrikes on schools, Reuters reported. The Israeli military said it struck a Hamas command center, Reuters reported.

“The Israeli military attacked a Hamas command and control center inside the Khadijah school complex in central Gaza,” the statement said. The Israeli military said the school was being used as a launching pad for attacks against Israeli forces and as a weapons storage facility, and warned civilians to evacuate before the strike.

After the Israeli airstrike, ambulances were seen speeding along dusty roads near the hospital, while some people ran in the opposite direction, the AP reported. Among the wounded was a man lying on a stretcher, and bodies covered with blankets and a dead infant were found lying inside the ambulance, the AP reported.

According to the AP, classrooms inside the bombed school were reduced to rubble. People were seen searching through the rubble for victims, some of whom were collecting the remains of the dead.

Earlier, the Israeli military ordered the evacuation of some designated humanitarian areas in the Gaza Strip ahead of the airstrikes on Khan Yunis on the 27th. The Israeli military said it was planning an operation against Hamas in Khan Yunis, including parts of the Muwashi (western coastal area) makeshift refugee camp where thousands are seeking refuge. The evacuation order was in response to rocket attacks that Israel claimed were fired from the area.

The planned strike came a day before officials from the U.S., Egypt, Qatar and Israel were scheduled to meet in Italy to discuss hostage and ceasefire negotiations, the AP reported.

U.S. and Egyptian officials told the AP on condition of anonymity that CIA Director Bill Burns is expected to meet on Wednesday with Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani, Mossad Director David Barnea and Egyptian National Intelligence Director Abbas Kamel.

According to the UN and humanitarian organizations, the second evacuation order this week included an attack on part of a 60-square-kilometer humanitarian zone filled with tent camps with limited sanitation and medical facilities and limited access to aid. Israel expanded the humanitarian zone in May to accommodate people fleeing Rafah, which at the time was home to more than half of Gaza’s population.

The Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip’s health ministry said at least 11 people were killed in another airstrike the same day.

The Gaza Strip’s Health Ministry announced on the 27th that at least 39,258 Palestinians were killed and 95,890 injured in Israel’s military offensive in the Gaza Strip.

The Gaza Strip’s Ministry of Health does not distinguish between combatants and civilians when tallying casualties.
