Two Palestinian teenagers were shot dead by Israeli forces during a raid in the West Bank village of al-Mughayyir. The killings occurred as settlers encircled the village and attempted to seize livestock, drawing international condemnation amid a surging wave of violence across the occupied territory.
What began as a confrontation over stolen livestock in the occupied West Bank ended in the deaths of two young Palestinians. The incident in al-Mughayyir unfolded as settlers entered the village under military and police escort, setting off a chain of events that left local families mourning and international observers warning of escalating displacement.
The Raid and Shootings in al-Mughayyir
The killings took place just after sunset when a group of settlers entered al-Mughayyir, located about 25 kilometres north of Ramallah, to take sheep from a Palestinian home. Village residents and activists reported that snipers took up position on rooftops before the violence erupted.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health identified the victims as 14-year-old Aws al-Naasan and 32-year-old Jihad Abu Naim, according to reporting by Canadian broadcaster CBC. Concurrently, other local reporting and international coverage identified the teenagers killed as Khalil Abu Alia, 16, and 19-year-old Omar al-Nassan. According to The Guardian, Abu Alia was about to start the 11th grade at the village school, while al-Nassan had graduated with top marks over the summer. Both youths were struck by gunfire and died before reaching the hospital.
Residents attempted to resist the seizure of the animals by throwing stones and cinder blocks. According to the Israeli military, forces were deployed after receiving reports that stones were thrown at an Israeli vehicle carrying civilians and a reserve soldier. The military stated that a reserve soldier exited the car and opened fire at suspects, while troops worked to disperse the gathering. The forces responded by firing at key instigators in order to remove the threat. Hits were identified,

A Community Under Siege and Rising Toll
Al-Mughayyir has increasingly become an epicenter of friction and violence in the West Bank. Local sources describe a continuous squeeze on residents’ daily lives, characterized by road closures, military gates, and agricultural restrictions.
Kathem Al-Haj-Ahmed, a 57-year-old resident, described the dynamic to wire services: This is our reality in al-Mughayyer village; they aim to displace us, and both the army and the settlers are exchanging roles among them.
The village school and its students have repeatedly borne the brunt of the unrest. Teachers and administrators reported that five students from the school’s 470-strong student body have been killed by Israeli soldiers and militants over the course of the year. As a new academic semester approached, staff members erected higher walls and strengthened compound gates while preparing teaching contingency plans due to tightening blockades.
According to data from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), at least 79 Palestinians, including 19 children, were killed in the occupied West Bank by settlers or Israeli forces earlier in the year, with at least 1,870 wounded. Human rights groups note that the number of Palestinians killed by settlers in the territory has already surpassed totals from previous years.
Simultaneous Demolitions in the South Hebron Hills
While al-Mughayyir reeled from the fatal shootings, Israeli forces carried out sweeping demolitions in the southern Hebron hills. Soldiers spent a full day razing the homes of 12 Palestinian families in the community of Khirbet al-Taban, leaving all 70 residents—including 28 children—homeless.
The Israeli-Palestinian rights group B’Tselem reported that troops destroyed all buildings, water cisterns, storage facilities, livestock pens, and caves in the area. According to the organization, this marks the 66th Palestinian community wiped off the map since October 2023, displacing nearly 5,000 people, roughly half of whom are children.
A spokesperson for Cogat, the Israeli military agency managing civilian affairs in the occupied territories, told The Guardian that troops were conducting enforcement activity against illegal construction inside a designated military training zone.
International Reaction and Wider Repercussions
The acceleration of settler violence and military raids has drawn mounting scrutiny from international bodies and foreign governments. In late August, Dr Ramiz Alakbarov, the UN Deputy Special Coordinator for the Middle East Process, stated that settler attacks have continued with virtually no accountability. Legal experts and human rights advocates, including UN special rapporteurs, have increasingly characterized these coordinated incursions as pogroms.
Diplomatic pressure has materialized in various ways across Western capitals. The European Union has weighed bans on settler-made goods, while some Western countries have announced sanctions on settler groups. Meanwhile, local communities continue to brace for further confrontations as restrictions tighten across West Bank villages, Christian enclaves like Taybeh, and rural farming hamlets alike.
